Travel Gallery - Portugal

Images from our travels through Portugal in the spring of 2003.

"The Navigators"- Supported by Henry the Navigator Portuguese sea adventurers and explorers led the world in navigation and exploration during the initial expansion of western European influence throughout the globe.

"Castello by the Sea" - guarding the approaches to Lisbon harbour stands this fortified tower.

"Old and New Signs" - A building wall provides an illustration of old and new Portugal. Coimbra - The central section of the ancient city of Coimbra is overlooked by the fortifications that seem to occupy every high place in Portugal.
"Fisherwomen and catch" - On the beachfront of a Portuguese fishing town fisherwomen arrange fish for drying on racks. "Catch of the Day" - An example of some types of eels that are a delicacy in fishmarkets in the country.

"Portuguese lighthouse "- A massive wave about to break onto the lighthouse.

"Roman ruins in Evorra"- Evorra, a historic
city in south central Portugal, is the site of
some of the best preserved Roman ruins
in the country.
"Transitions" - Symbolic of the transition from Roman influence to the Christian era are the Roman columns in the foreground framing the cross on the church in the background in the main square in Evorra.
